چکیده

This paper, after briefly describing our context and the problems faced by science and engineering students studying mathematics, presents WALLIS, a webbased system that is being developed to address some of these problems. Keeping in mind pedagogy and the development of a learner-centred application, we first describe the iterative methodology which we employed, and theories (such as constructivism and contingent instruction) that influence the system’s design and the feedback it provides. Finally we briefly present some results that the system’s integration provides despite its early stages, and could be particular useful for similar projects.

User-Centred Design & Development of an Applied Web-Based ITS

This paper describes how a user-centred engineering cycle is employed during the development of a web-based instructional system for first year science and engineering students learning mathematics. After an overview of the relevant methodology and appropriate theory that influences the system's design, we briefly present the system together with the steps that led to its integration in the tea...

Using a Web Platform to the Teaching of Chemical Processes for Secondary School Students Outreach

As a complement to the teaching of university students, the use of web based tools enhances students’ autonomy, helps in dealing with different learning rhythms and allows reaching students in different locations. Moreover, the web can also be used to attract youngsters (basic and secondary school students) to science subjects. All these functions have been combined in a single web platform “La...

ASL-STEM Forum: A Bottom-Up Approach to Enabling American Sign Language to Grow in STEM Fields

Deaf and hard of hearing students studying advanced topics in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) lack standard terminology to enable them to learn, discuss and contribute to their chosen fields. The ASLSTEM Forum enables the diverse, thinly-spread groups that are independently creating and using terminology to come together using a community-based, video-enabled web resour...

Learning from Erroneous Examples

Erroneous examples (ErrEx) that is, worked solutions that include one or more errors that the student is asked to detect, explain, and/or correct have been rarely investigated as a teaching strategy in mathematics. On the contrary, correct worked examples have been the focus of research on mathematics and science problem solving, e.g. (4). Yet, the scarce work on ErrEx in mathematics has provid...

Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative Summer Camp 2012

INTRODUCTION Previous research has clearly shown that studying a curriculum related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) has numerous positive effects on students. These effects include increased motivation to learn, trends of higher achievement, and positive attitudes toward school [1]. Also, studying STEM topics makes students better problem solvers, better innovators and inve...
